Herbert encourages persons to monitor Atlantic activity

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WITH a significant amount of activity brewing within the Atlantic, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is urging residents of the Federation to remain alert, watchful and to be prepared.

SKNVibes – via the St. Kitts Meteorological Office – understands that with the presence of a low pressure system, the Federation has a moderate chance of brief thunderstorms occurring as of last night (Aug. 20).

Additionally, another low pressure system – with an 80 percent chance of developing into a tropical cyclone – is located approximately 1 000 miles to the east of the Lesser Antilles. It is moving at a pace of 20-25 miles per hour and can become a tropical cyclone within the ensuing 24 hours.

The system – according to the NHC – could reach Lesser Antilles by Wednesday and these territories have advised to closely monitor its progress.

Located to the south south-west of the Cape Verde Islands is another system – a tropical wave – which the NHC said yesterday (Aug. 21) has a 30 percent chance of developing into a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours.

National Disaster Coordinator Carl Herbert is reminding residents of the Federation to keep their ears to the ground and make it their business to be aware of tropical activity.

“I want to take this opportunity to remind residents to pay close attention to local weather forecasts in relation to weather systems that are approaching the Leeward Islands. We ask persons to be very vigilant and to ensure that they follow the information that would be given in the various advisories and bulletin.

“And we ask persons to do all that they can to be prepared in the event that the situation may become more serious than may be forecasted, recognising that weather systems do change rapidly...sometimes with very little notice.”
