BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis is amongst a number of Eastern Caribbean territories which have been placed under Tropical Storm Warning.
The St. Kitts Meteorological Office – in a statement issued this morning (Aug. 21) – informed that St. Kitts-Nevis, Antigua & Barbuda, Montserrat and Anguilla have all been placed under tropical storm warning as a result of approaching Tropical Depression Nine.
The system formed east of the Lesser Antilles and, as at 8:00 a.m., its centre was located at approximately 1 186 kilometres to the east-south-east of the St. Kitts and is moving at a pace of 20 miles per hour.
With the general trend of movement expected to continue over the next few days, “the depression is expected to become a tropical storm later today” and “the cyclone should move through the southern Leeward Islands and northern Windward Islands” sometime during Wednesday afternoon.
Speaking with this publication yesterday, Carl Herbert - National Disaster Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) – advised residents of the Federation to closely monitor these systems and to be prepared for any eventuality.
He had also reminded persons to refrain from parking their vehicles along ghauts and other waterways prior to and during the passage of these weather systems in order to avoid loss of life and or property.
Sometime tomorrow, the Federation can expect to experience heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with strong gusty winds as a result of the approaching storm.
