GEORGETOWN, Guyana – FESTIVAL CITY came alive last Friday with performances from the Federation’s 29-member delegation at the official launch of the 10th Caribbean Festival of Arts [Carifesta X] celebrations.

Hordes of energized regional, foreign and local participants were entertained throughout the Opening Ceremony of the Carifesta X, which returned to the historic site in North Ruimveldt where the inaugural event was held 36 years ago.

The Federation’s very own, Okolo Tegremantine, ecstatically gave a riveting performance which was, according to the Stabroek News, “a spectacular dance routine that was loved by the crowd”.

The spellbinding piece promoted the culture of St. Kitts and Nevis and delved into its rich heritage, which encouraged a feverish response from the large group of spectators. The African-heritage dance troupe’s

performance was noted as “among the best in the region”.

Stabroek News reported that Robert Williams, Deputy Mayor of Georgetown, stated, “It was a good thing to have the delegates come here to perform because it actually gives you a chance to retrace history.”

The start of the official launch was delayed by untimely inclement weather which soaked the entire grounds. Nevertheless, the day was rescued with the festive parade of participating nations which awakened the entire Festival City.

The parade comprised of 19 countries, each of which had its own troupe of dancers and musicians adorned with the flag of their respective nation. The lengthy procession was followed by over 1 000 Guyanese dancers who took to the stage minutes before the opening ceremony.

Under the theme “One Caribbean, One Purpose, Our Culture, Our Life”, this year’s nine-day festival will showcase Caribbean culture and, as voiced by many, it would positively encourage Heads of Government to hasten the initiative of regional integration. ~~Adz:Left~~
