BREAKING NEWS: Appellate Court rules in favour of Brantley and Amory

Hons. Mark Brantley (L) and Vance Amory
By: Stanford Conway, SKNVibes

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THE Eastern Caribbean Court of Appeal this morning (Aug. 27) upheld the judgment of Justice Lionel Jones in the Nevis Election Petition case, ruling in favour of Mark Brantley, Deputy Leader of the Concerned Citizen’s Movement (CCM).

Brantley had lost the St. John’s Constituency’s seat to Deputy Leader of the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) Hensley Daniel by 14 votes, and he had filed an election petition on the grounds that 200-plus voters were disenfranchised due to their names being illegally removed from the Voters’ List shortly before the election took place in July 2011.

Following a two-week trial in January, Justice Jones declared the election invalid and a stay of execution was granted to allow the NRP-led Nevis Island Administration to continue to function uninterrupted until the appeal has been heard.

And in another judgment, which was also handed down this morning, the Court of Appeal ruled in favour of former Nevis Premier Vance Amory, overturning a decision by the lower court to dismiss his challenge to the legality of a Commission of Inquiry into alleged wrong-doing by his CCM-led Administration.

Details of the rulings will be provided in a subsequent publication.
