Acting Commissioner of Police (COP) Ag.Stafford Liburd
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MEMBERS of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and the St. Kitts Nevis Fire and Rescue Department were encouraged to be unwavering in their commitment to maintain law and order in the Federation.

The men and women, who were participants in a recently concluded training workshop, lent their ears to the words of encouragement which were delivered by the Acting Commissioner of Police (COP), Stafford Liburd, on Friday during the closing ceremony of the workshop.

The Acting COP told the officers that the organisations they represent face challenges which demand that they remain adaptable to present-day situations and being ever-committed to the tasks they have been mandated to perform.

“Whatever the reasons for such changes, we, who are in leadership positions in our respective organisations, cannot and should not use this as an excuse for non-performance. We cannot just see leadership being those who head the organisation.

We must look at those of us who have to manage the organisation’s resources in anyway…Our effective use of all these resources allows improved communication with our counterparts at every level; below us, above us, parallel to us in other organisations. This can certainly improve and enhance our respective organisations.”

The officers were reminded and admonished to embed within their memories, the fact that they are in the crime-fighting business that embodies both crime prevention and crime detection. Liburd also expressed that this realisation, coupled with an optimistic approach to one’s duties, is key to building confidence among the public.     ~~Adz:Right~~

“All police officers, regardless of where they are stationed or attached, must recognise and acknowledge that they are in the crime prevention business. That means, not committing crime but preventing and detecting crime. Therefore, our emphasis must be on preventative strategies.  Whenever we do not succeed in preventing a crime, solving it must be important to us.  Certainly, we cannot and will not be able to eliminate all the crime in society, but our positive approach towards our duty of preventing and detecting crime is imperative. It will certainly assist with building confidence with and among the public.”

Crime’s reach is extensive, the Acting COP explained, noting those officers who left the workshop with suggestions and ideas for implementation in their respective organisations should not be discouraged in seeking to get the ideas implemented.

“…You have spent several hours and time in training. Your thoughts are fresh. You have been reminded of certain things that you may have already known. You may return to your organisation with some positive ideas, wonderful ideas which you might wish to implement instantaneously but you may not succeed; but you cannot give up.  Certainly, you cannot give up.  You have got to maintain discipline even with the suggestion and the idea, so when the stripes come, the bars come of whatever decoration that comes with your uniform reflecting upward mobility in the organisation, you can demonstrate that your time spent here was very meaningful and positive and your advancement will be seen as positive to the organisation.”

The officers were urged to view their success at crime-fighting not only as personal accomplishments but as steps towards the improvement of “the quality of life for all of our citizens in the Federation”.
