Traffic accident claims 29 lives

~~Adz:Right~~ PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – ACCORDING to reports from U.N Peacekeepers, it is estimated that around 29 persons lost their lives on Saturday (Aug. 23) as a result of a road accident involving four vehicles.

The horrific event also caused in excess of 50 women and children to be treated for injuries resulting from the same incident.

Vincenzo Pugliese, a U.N. spokesman (speaking to the Haitian Times) indicated that a large truck was unable to stop and ploughed into a pickup which had come to a sudden stop in front of it. This caused a chain-reaction of events that saw the first pickup hitting a second in front of it, the impact of which caused the first truck to swerve into an oncoming third vehicle and overturn.

Unfortunately, the truck which overturned was carrying merchandise and people when the incident occurred just East of the town of Cavaillon.  Peacekeepers treated and evacuated most of the injured and indicated that five had to be airlifted by helicopter to the nearest Port-Au-Prince hospital.
