Resident thankful there were no casualties
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – RESIDENTS on the western end of Cayon Street were barred from leaving their premises yesterday morning (Sept. 3) after a large truck slammed into their fence and deposited in their yards.
The incident occurred sometime between 7:50 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. in the vicinity of Joe and the Boys Shop and, according to the Traffic Department, it involved motor truck PA2461 (X-Amount of Nick) which was driven by Ricky Mardenborough of Halfway Tree and is owned by Nicholas Spencer of Old Road.
SGT Calvin Amory of that Department explained that Mardenborough was travelling in an easterly direction and after overtaking a car that was parked on the mountain-side of the road, he lost control and crashed into two properties on the mountain-side of the road. The vehicle also made contact with a nearby utility pole.
The perimeter fence for the properties was destroyed by the impact and the front of the vehicle – SKNVibes understands – was extensively damaged. Thankfully – however – no injuries were sustained.
One of the individuals who occupy one of the affected properties – in an interview with this publication – explained that she had left her premises to place an item in a vehicle, and just before she could get there she heard a loud crashing sound.
She further explained that when she returned to her premises, she saw the vehicle in her yard which prevented her from entering.
The woman expressed that she was fearful and shaky, especially having taken stock of what could have befallen her.
“I normally stand on the last step and wait for the bus to come for me to take me to work. But this morning, at the time when the accident happened, I went to take an item to a vehicle. I was thinking about taking it to the vehicle earlier but I didn’t. Had I taken it earlier, I would have been right there when the accident happened, and while I don’t believe the truck would have caused me any damage, the debris from the damaged fence could have.
So shaken was the lady that she found it necessary to take a walk to calm herself. She expressed her gratitude however because, as she puts it, “Prayer beats all and I am thankful that no one was hurt.”
SGT Amory told this publication that the Department is making investigations into the incident.
