BRONX, New York – Over three hundred persons turned out last Saturday night (Sept. 1) at the Maestro’s Banquet Hall, located at Bronxdale Avenue in the Bronx, New York, to participate in the Sandy Point Benevolent Society’s Second Annual Awards Banquet.
The event was held to acknowledge the achievements of alumni of the Sandy Point High School, now called the Charles E. Mills High School.
The event was chaired by Mr. Livingston ‘Gilley’ Richardson with musical accompaniment by the Breakaway Brass.
Those honoured at this year’s Banquet are His Excellency Dr. Simon B. Jones-Hendrickson, who is a full Professor of Economics at the University of the Virgin Islands; Dr. Joseph J. Halliday OBE for his outstanding contribution to the Education system in St. Kitts and Nevis; and Dr. Hannah Guishard, who is the CEO and founder of a very flourishing veterinary medical practice in Georgia, USA.
The event was held under the patronage of The Right Honourable Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, who addressed the gathering.
Among those in attendance were the Parliamentary Representative for the town of Sandy Point, the Honourable Shawn K. Richards, who is also an alumnus of the school; and St. Kitts and Nevis Ambassador to the United Nations, Her Excellency Jacinth Henry-Martin, who is the former Parliamentary Representative for Sandy Point.
The Feature Address was given by His Excellency Dr. Simon B. Jones-Hendrickson who, in his presentation, spoke about his influences and inspiration for his popular book Sonny Jim of Sandy Point.
His theme for the evening was centered on the saying “Mighty oaks from little acorns grow”, which means “Great things may come from small Beginnings”.
