BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – NEW bags, new shoes, books and uniforms all ‘rocked’ yesterday, September 3, by most of the Federation’s children as the new school year began.

Many parents stayed with their children a little longer helping them to get settled into their new schools and classes, especially those who were attending Kindergarten or High School for the first time.

It was exciting and filled with hope, as the children are one step closer to making their dreams come true as they pursue their education.

Not only are the students and parents excited but also the teachers.

“We, too, are excited about the new school year,” said Canecia Warner, Principal of the Victoria Road Pre-School.

“We’re excited about meeting the new children and showing off our new charts and teaching.”

At the Basseterre High School (BHS), the school bore a WELCOME banner and the headmistress of the school, Carleen Morton, greeted students at the gate.

A ceremony was held to welcome the new and old students and to encourage them to do well for the new school year.

Ron Dubblin-Collins, Head of Guidance and Counseling Department and Health Family Life Education at BHS said that spirits were high about the new school year.

“There have been a lot of successes during the last school year that have in fact pivoted us into this new year with a lot of excitement. There is a lot of high expectation that both students and teachers have, and a sort of renewed commitment by students that they will seek to do much better,” he said.

He said that there are measures in place for those who did not do so well in their examinations.

“We have measures in place so they can do much better, those that are repeating, we have programmes in place to provide support so they don’t repeat the errors of the past, but rather they can build on their strengths and go past their weaknesses.

There are some new challenges that are ahead of us, but in the Departments, they are strategizing by putting improvement plans in place, so you can have a much higher performance overall,” he said.
