Education. Experience. Connections. RUSVM Internship Program Continues

By: RUSVM, Press Release

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, September 5th 2012 - As a show of sustained partnership with the community of St. Kitts and Nevis, Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) in partnership with Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College recently celebrated the successful completion of its internship program in August.  Fifteen interns aged 17- 19 from the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College joined the RUSVM team in June for the internship experience. The students possessed a variety of backgrounds, but they all shared an excitement and willingness to learn and grow as young men and women. Each intern was assigned to a department based upon his/her individual skills and future career aspirations.

    As part of the social skills element of the internship experience, RUSVM staff members provided weekly presentations examining key areas of employment such as team dynamics, time management, customer service, conflict resolution, preparing for the world of work, financial management, and communication in the workplace. The internship experience provides an on-the-job sense of what the "real workplace" is like, and provides RUSVM with the benefit of additional employee support, while more accurately assessing candidates.

    RUSVM 2012 summer interns included: Tiara Caines, who has dreams of becoming a pediatrician; Krystal Glasford, who is determined to become a research scientist where she can help discover new cures for diseases; Shanequa Henry, a very ambitious, determined young lady whose goal is to be an entrepreneur and give back to her community; Dishon Heyliger, a very confident young man whose goal is to become a veterinarian or a marine biologist; Kathlyn Hobson, who loves working with numbers and desires to become an accountant; Abigail Lawrence, who is motivated by her passion to help children and plans to become a teacher; Collen Leader, who wishes to work in information technology;

    Shirnaldeen Lewis, who wishes to works in forensic pathology; Kelvin Liddie who wishes to work in the field of information technology; Sheneece Meade, who plans to become a doctor specializing in pediatrics; Shannakay Raymond, who hopes to study law and journalism; Camarra Rogers, who wishes to enter the accounting field; Leanne Walters, whose goal is to enter the world of business; Jahmal Watts, whose aspiration is to become a banker; and Jenicia Woodley, who aspires to work in the field of business administration.

    Ms. Kizzy Dedier and Ms. Donie Daniel, members of the RUSVM Human Resources team, were responsible for hiring the interns and coordinating the overall student internship experience. Mrs. Joanne Walters, Human Resource Manager, reflected on the benefits obtained from the program to both the University and the students participating. “The RUSVM internship program not only helps students in the community get started, but also enhances the local workforce as a whole. They gain experience, develop skills, make connections, add depth and credibility to their resumes, learn about a specific field, and assess their interests and abilities. At times, participants in the internship program are hired later as new full-time employees, ” Walters remarked.

    Walters explained that the program is a great opportunity for the interns to learn valuable work-related skills as this may be a first job for many of them, and allows them to put into practice some of the theory they may have learned in school. In addition to being beneficial to the interns themselves, the program can also enhance corporate perspective. New people bring with them novel and fresh ideas, and specialized strengths and skill sets. These augment the abilities of RUSVM’s professional workforce. The extra support is especially advantageous particularly during the summer months when many employees are on vacation.

    RUSVM’s paid internship is of particular benefit, because it enables economically disadvantaged youth to participate. Students who have to help fund their own schooling will need a job. Being accepted to the internship program provides that initial thrust which can facilitate a positive future.

    Introduced in 2004, the RUSVM internship program is one of the longest standing partnerships that the university has with the community of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College. Eight years into the program, the partnership is still going strong. RUSVM continues to work towards the program’s longevity and success.
