Charlestown Nevis (March 29, 2005) Communications Officer in the Department of Agriculture, Mr. Eric Evelyn said that preparations for the 2005 Agricultural Open Day are in full gear as things are going beyond expectations.
Speaking to the Government Information Services on Monday, he noted that the annual event which is in its eleventh year will be held under the patronage of Mr. Winston Hanley.
He said, "The event which runs from 9.00 am to 5.30 pm on Thursday March 31st and Friday April 1st, will highlight up to date technology and services in all aspects of Agriculture."
According to Evelyn, "Top quality local crop and livestock products will also be on show. There will be an official opening ceremony at 9.30 am on Thursday during which some of the outstanding staff members of the department will be honoured. Special recognition will also be paid to this year's patron," he commented..
As the Ministry and the department of Agriculture continue their efforts to increase production and productivity as well as to lift the profile of agriculture on Nevis, the theme chosen was "Food Security" "Out Top Priority" with its slogan, "Promote, Produce, Preserve."
The Communications Officer also expressed that participation is expected from all of the department's allied agencies that include, IICA, CARDI and the Republic of China on Taiwan as well as various stakeholders in the industry.
The department is this year placing special emphasis on cassava and as a result of this, there will be presentation of a variety of foods from cassava on the spot. Cultural appearances will be made from various primary schools as well as a clown troupe from Guadeloupe is expected to make a guest appearance.
