PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten – ARMED officers of the St. Maarten Police Force responded to a lead around 11:20 a.m. on Wednesday, August 27 to seize a wanted US fugitive who had been staying at Lake’s Guesthouse in the Illidge Road area.

Twenty-six-year-old Michael Jason Registe, a suspect of a 2007 murder and a 2005 case of aggravated assault in the US, had been hiding from the police authorities for over 13 months. It is suspected, according to FBI reports, that the June 2007 fatal shootings at the Columbus State University, which caused the death of two student athletes, were committed by Registe.

Since his escape, he has sought refuge in at least two Caribbean countries (St. Thomas (USVI) and Dominica) before arriving in St. Maarten. The Georgia-born suspect was among others featured on “America’s Most Wanted”, and just about a month ago, according to the FBI, he was added to its “Most Wanted” list.

According to The Daily Herald (St. Maarten), “Registe was transferred to the Pointe Blanche House of Detention almost immediately after Police A-Team officers swooped in with an arrest warrant from the US, surrounded the guesthouse, blocked traffic on both sides and took the suspect into custody.”    ~~Adz:Right~~

An FBI-issued poster describes Registe as “thin (approximately 140 lbs), five feet eight inches tall, black, with brown eyes and sporting a distinct quartet of tattoos, including the words ‘South Side’ on his upper right arm, a Chinese letter and the words ‘706 Gangsta’ on his upper left arm and a picture of Yosemite Sam with the words ‘Stick Up Kid’ underneath on his right forearm”.

Currently, local authorities are awaiting an official extradition request from the US government for Registe to return to face trial in Georgia. And the FBI “has all intentions” to hasten and complete all necessary paperwork to extradite him. The award of US$100 00 for the tipster will be granted at a later date.
