Tribute to Carmen Ottley, Jamaica 50 SKN Awardee

L-R JamKit Pres, Carmen Ottley, Minister of Culture
By: Jamaica Kittitian (JamKit) Association, Press Release

BASSETERRE, St Kitts; 8 September 2012: “WHATEVER time I have left, I’m going to give it to the Lord” says this St. Ann born awardee from Jamaica’s north-eastern parish. This conviction has directed much of her contribution to the Region.

Mrs. Carmen Ottley trained as a nurse at the Kingston Public Hospital and the University Hospital of the West Indies in Jamaica. Intermittently, from 1968, this Jamaican has lived in the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis, the United Kingdom, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica.

While living in Trinidad and Tobago, she used her skills and experience to set up and run a private health establishment known as the St. Augustine Medical Association, which she managed for eight (8) years before leaving that twin island republic. The institution offered surgical, gynaecological and other medical services to the community. Over 25 years later, this mini-hospital is still in existence, offering much needed health care to the nationals of Trinidad & Tobago.

In the Federation of St. Christopher & Nevis, this awardee put her personal mantra to work, i.e. “if you plan to do something, go straight ahead with no hesitation”. This led her to be a force in the small business sector on St. Kitts, setting up a patisserie, tourism sector gift shops, beauty supplies locations and a spa. All the while, she was offering employment and training opportunities for Kittitians and Nevisians.

Her most prized entrepreneurial venture, however, is the establishment of the Harmony (Christian) Book store, which venture she facilitated along with a group of like minded-individuals in 2002. This store is a non-profit entity, run completely by volunteers, that feeds the spiritual needs of the Nation. Moreover, in an era of internet ordering and online purchases, this store’s most popularly sold item is the Holy Bible. This is indeed a refreshing indication that this store has stepped in to satisfy a growing niche area. The proceeds of the entity do not go to the individuals who set it up; instead, 100% of the revenue is donated monthly to do God’s work within the Federation.

Mrs. Carmen Ottley is married to Dr. Clive Ottley, who is from St. Kitts & Nevis, and has one daughter, Carol, who was born in Nevis.

Mrs. Ottley has put her entrepreneurial and management skills to good use, and for this, we are grateful and honour her.

The JamKit Association invites you to acknowledge Mrs. Carmen Ottley for her contribution to health-care, business and society. Mrs. Ottley JamKit salutes you.

NB: Mrs. Ottley was one (1) of the five (5) Awardees honoured by the JamKit Association at the Official Launch & Flag Raising Ceremony of its Jamaica 50 SKN Celebrations held on Sunday, 12 August 2012 at the Zion Moravian Church. The plaque recognizing this Award was presented to Mrs. Ottley by the Honourable Marcella Liburd, Minister of Culture and Miss Carol Phillips, President, JamKit Association.
