    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (March 29, 2005):
    Development projects in agriculture and fisheries were the focus of discussions between the Hon. Cedric Liburd and Ambassador of Japan His Excellency Shigenobu Kato, when the ambassador paid a courtesy call on the minister today.
     
    Among the issues discussed were the proposed fisheries complexes for Old Road, Sandy Point and Dieppe Bay, similar projects for Nevis, as well as the imminent closure of the sugar industry.
     
    Minister Liburd, who is responsible for agriculture and fisheries, thanked the ambassador for the continued support and contributions of the Government of Japan towards the development of the fishing industry in the Federation. He further expressed the appreciation of the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis for the support of Japan in the Federations successful bid to host the 2006 International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting, during which over 750 country representatives are expected to attend.
     
    Ambassador Kato said the Government of Japan deeply appreciates the continued support of the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis in its bi-lateral relations with Japan, as well as the positive relations that exist regionally and internationally. He commented that over the past 10 years Japan has invested millions of dollars in training, technical cooperation and development projects for member countries of CARICOM, and indicated also that the Government of Japan was very pleased on being able to invest a grant of US$4 million in the recently opened Guyana-based CARICOM Secretariat.
     
    Ambassador Kato will be paying courtesy calls on other Ministers of Government during his brief visit to the Federation.
