Government Remains Committed to Controlling Traffic Flow in Capital

~~Adz:Right~~Roadtown, Tortola- Government is making strides in its efforts to control the flow of traffic in the Road Town area.

Acting Director of the Public Works Department Dr. Drexel Glasgow told the Department of Information and Public Relations that the drawings for the design and installation of traffic lights in Road Town are completed and have subsequently been approved by Government.

“The draft tender document has been submitted to the Attorney General’s Chambers for vetting and once that process is completed, the document will be sent to the Procurement Unit of the Ministry of Finance for publication in local newspapers. The invitation to tenders will be open to all experienced contractors who are certified in traffic signal installation,” Dr. Glasgow explained.

The Ministry of Communications and Works announced in early March Government’s plans to embark on phase one of a two-phase modernisation programme for Waterfront Drive by installing traffic lights at the Road Town Roundabout and at the intersection that connects Waterfront Drive and Admin Drive in the first instance, to ensure a smooth flow of traffic during peak hours.

As part of the public education programme, both Dr. Glasgow and Mr. Andrew St. Hilaire of the Ministry of Communications and Works will be the featured guests on ZBVI’s radio programme, “The Hot Seat” on Wednesday, September 3 at 7:30pm.  The public is encouraged to tune in to learn more about the project.

Phase ll of the Waterfront modernisation programme will be the construction of a four-lane highway from the Road Town Roundabout to the Sea View Hotel corner in MacNamara.

The installation of traffic lights and construction of the highway are in keeping with Government’s commitment to implement improved traffic management systems for the Territory’s capital, Road Town.
