ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, September 7th. 2012   –  Communities throughout the Virgin Islands received a make-over as 64 students ended their summer holidays by assisting with district beautification projects through the Department of Waste Management’s Summer Beautification Programme.

Assistant Manager in the Department of Waste Management, Mr. Greg Massicote told the Department of Information and Public Relations that the programme, a modified version of their summer clean-up campaign, targeted students ages 13 to 17 years old.“This year we held the programme from August 20 to August 31 and it was redesigned to ensure that the students improved their skills base as they beautified their respective communities,” said Mr. Massicote.

Beautification projects on Tortola included the painting of the Capoons Bay Community Clinic; the painting of the Valerie O. Thomas Community Centre; tree planting in Purcell, assisted by personnel from the National Parks Trust; and the restoration of the East End/Long Look Playground. On Jost Van Dyke students painted culturally themed murals on walls within their respective communities. All painting projects were supervised by qualified painters.

“Based on the feedback received, the students really enjoyed working with the projects and learning the correct way to paint and plant,” shared Mr. Massicote.

The Assistant Manager added that the department will further strengthen the initiative so that the Territory’s youth can continue to benefit as they learn to make meaningful contributions to their communities.

On completion of the projects students received a small stipend to assist with back to school supplies. All beautification projects were selected by the District Representative, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Development.

The Department of Waste Management falls under the portfolio of the Ministry of Health and Social Development which endeavours to provide leadership that promotes health, social well being and a safe environment.
