Liverpool Row gets facelift as Road Development Programme continues

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - MOTORISTS  and pedestrians will soon be dealing with fewer potholes from road deterioration as the Ministry of Public Works continues with their Road Development Programme which includes the resurfacing of Liverpool Row.

On Friday afternoon (Sept. 7) members of the Public Works team were seen excavating the old surface and preparing to lay down the new one.

Speaking with SKNVibes, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Works and Utilities Lenrick Lake said that this project is just another leg in the Road Development Programme, as the Ministry ventures towards having the deteriorating roads in St. Kitts repaired.

This leg of the project, which was expected to be completed yesterday, was delayed due unforeseen difficulties.

"Due to unforeseen difficulties encountered during the removal of the old surface of Liverpool Row, resurfacing of the said road has been delayed. As a result, Liverpool Row will remain closed to vehicular traffic on Monday Sept. 10th to facilitate completion of works.

"Traffic flow on the lower portion of Church Street and lower College Street will be affected. Signs will be placed to indicate restrictions," a Traffic Department press release said.

Lake said that the Liverpool Row project is expected to be completed sometime this week after which the crew would head towards the Village area to work on the Trafalgar road and then proceed to the St. Johnson and Dorset areas.

The Road Development Programme began in September 2011 with the resurfacing of West Independence Square Street, followed by a few roads in the Newtown and Greenlands area, as well as some roads in rural areas.

The Programme then continued with the resurfacing of Church Street and Princes Street.

The Programme is an ongoing one with an initiative to fix all deteriorating roads in St. Kitts and in about two years' time, at least 90 percent of the roads, if all goes well, would be expected to be in very good condition.

In a related exercise, a trench that was dug across the Kim Collins Highway to allow the Electricity Department to run lines underground to power the newly erected LED street lights was filled in and the road is now re-opened.

Lake said that everything is running smoothly on that project and that it should be completed by its scheduled date which is set at September 19.
