BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – BEDECKED in their immaculate-looking uniforms and with the willingness to learn, thousands of children reported to their respective schools yesterday, which officially marked the end of their summer sabbatical and the beginning of a new school year.
Parents and guardians kissed their children goodbye and sent them to begin the next chapter of their budding lives, while, for some, that next chapter is a new grade and for others a different learning environment.
While most were welcomed by familiar faces, others were thrust into classrooms speckled with new faces; faces with which they would have to familiarise themselves, as for at least the next year, they will be classmates.
Just a few months ago, the students sat examinations to determine whether they would advance to a higher level or remain at the level at which they were during the 2007-2008 school year.
SKNVibes spoke to students yesterday and some of them explained that they were not too enthused to return to school because they immensely enjoyed their summer vacation and did not wish for it to end. Others, however, indicated that while they enjoyed their summer vacation they anxiously anticipated the commencement of the new school year.
This media house also spoke to a teacher of one of the island’s secondary schools and she noted that “the general air of the school today [Sept. 1] was encouraging” and “the children seemed very enthusiastic”.
She noted however that while she has her expectations, she cannot say what the new school year will hold but would have to wait and see how it pans out. “I can see that this would be an interesting year and the children seem very enthusiastic, but this is just the first day and we will have to see how the year goes.”
The commencement of the new school year comes with an influx of students traversing the streets of the island and the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force’s Traffic Department is reminding both students and motorists to “look out for each other” and continue to observe the traffic rules and regulations.
Head of the Traffic Department Inspector Venetta Wyatt reminded motorists to “look out for children especially when they are seeking to cross the roads. Also look out for the crossing guards who are assisting children and also elderly persons in getting from one side of the road to another”.
Inspector Wyatt also reminded children to “always look for the crossing guards who will assist you in getting to the other side of the road and always look out for oncoming traffic”.
As is the custom on the first day of the new school year, children attending public schools were given the afternoon off and returned this morning for the second day of the new school year. ~~Adz:Right~~
