Claims self defence
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – BENTLEY ‘DANNY’ HUGGINS, a native of St. Kitts-Nevis, is currently on trial in London for allegedly hacking his wife to death last Christmas.
Huggins – said to be in his early 40s - is accused of stabbing his wife, Desirie Thomas, to death at their Elliston House home in Woolwich, London.
According to an article posted on http://www.newsshopper.co.uk on September 5, 2012, the Old Bailey heard of how the 35-year-old deceased “was found lying face down in a pool of blood by police on December 23”.
Further revealed in court – News Shopper indicates – was that just hours before Thomas’ body was found by police, Huggins discovered that she wanted a divorce which may have resulted in him being homeless.
The sitting jury heard of how Huggins – who pleads that his wife’s death was a result of him defending himself – said his wife was abusive towards him and had taken a kitchen knife with which she attacked him. The jury members also heard that he grappled the knife from her before tuning it on her, stabbing her some 10 times.
The UKPA said that two weeks prior to the fateful incident, Huggins had gone to the police complaining that his wife of 22 months was abusive towards him.
This – according to the UKPA – was classified by court prosecutor Zeo Johnson QC as “pre-emptive strike” on Huggins’ part as he feared his wife was about to complain him to the authorities.
“The defendant is a self-serving person who believes the world owes him a living and believes women should be subservient to his needs. On the day she was killed, Desirie Thomas had decided to divorce the defendant.
“That would have had the inevitable and devastating effect of making him homeless and being sent back to St Kitts…” the UKPA quotes Prosecutor Johnson as saying.
