Government to Host Workshop for Taxi Drivers/Tour Operators

~~Adz:Right~~Roadtown; Tortola: Tuesday, September 2 – Government is attempting to improve the quality of tours offered to visitors to the Territory by hosting a workshop for taxi-drivers and tour operators on September 30.

The workshop entitled Road Town: Then and Now is being organised by the Office of the City Manager.

City Manager Ms. Eugenia O’Neal told the Department of Information and Public Relations the workshop is designed to make participants more knowledgeable about historical sites in the Territory’s capital, Road Town, and the people who helped to shape the society.

Ms. O’Neal said “I am hoping that by raising awareness and knowledge of Road Town’s history, I am also helping to raise awareness of the need to allocate much greater resources to the preservation and restoration of our historical sites.”

The City Manager identified some of the historical sites in Road Town such as the old Administration Building, where the Post Office is now located, which was originally built in 1866; the former prison, next to the St. George’s Anglican Church, built in the 1700s; the former home of Sir Olva Georges; the Joseph Reynold O’Neal Botanic Gardens; Government House; the Folk Museum and the Lower Estate Sugar Works.

Ms. O’Neal is hoping that with the additional knowledge gained from the workshop, taxi drivers and tour operators will be able to “enhance their service and offer a quality experience to visitors or anyone signing up for a tour.”

She added that “participants should come away being able to name at least five of the capital’s historical sites and five of its prominent residents and to give some details about them.”

The City Manager further stated that “participants should also be able to say how at least two neighbourhoods got their names, give details about the names behind certain buildings and describe three major events that took place in Road Town.”

The half-day workshop will be held at the Public Service Training Centre at the Training Division starting at 9:00 a.m. Participants will receive certificates upon successful completion of the workshop.

The Office of the City Manager, which falls within the portfolio of the Premier’s Office, functions to enhance the attractions of the Territory’s capital.
