Anegada Lands Allocation Nearing its Final Stages

Members of Government and a cross-section of community members listen to a presentation at the Anegada Development Project and Land Allocation Task meeting on August 28, 2008 at the Emile Dunlop Community Centre on Anegada
ANEGADA, B.V. I - The issue of Anegada land allocation is in its final stages of planning and the beginning of its implementation

Chief Planner in the Town and Country Department Mr. Louis Potter, at last Thursday’s public meeting on Anegada, conveyed Government’s plan to develop three communities there which will consist of town centres, resort lots, industrial areas and residential lots.  Land have also been allocated for agriculture, infrastructure and institutional use with areas set aside for conservation and preservation.

Deputy Chief Planner in the Town and Country Planning Department Mr. Steve Augustine presented Government’s categories for land allocation referred to as Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3.  Mr. Augustine also explained the land exchange methodology which will ensure a fair distribution and exchange for all involved.

Premier and representative for the ninth district Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE, encouraged Anegadians to put their dreams into action so they may own the Anegada lands with titles to show ownership.

Speaking at the public meeting, the Premier acknowledged the work done by the Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Honourable Omar W. Hodge in his interest to settle the Anegada lands dispute.

In his remarks Honourable Hodge acknowledged the braveness of the Anegada people and promised that he will stay with them until they possess the claimed lands. Honourable Hodge further encouraged Anegadians to work with the committee to see the plans come to fruition.    ~~Adz:Right~~

”The lands of Anegada belong to the Anegadians,” said the Natural Resources Minister.  “Hold on to your titles.  Do not sell the lands.  Whatever is covered here tonight is not cast in stone but I think this is the way forward and I need your support in the interest of you and your children’s future,” Minister Hodge said.

In spite of earlier concerns expressed during the meeting, Anegadians largely agreed to give Government’s proposal a try.  Once lands have been allocated, the owners will receive freehold titles to the lands, which gives absolute possession or ownership of the lands.

The distribution of land titles to Anegadians is expected to begin by the end of this year.

Over 60 Anegadians attended the August 28 public meeting on the Anegada Lands Allocation and Land Development Plan at the Emile Dunlop Community Centre. Similar public meetings are scheduled to be held on September 6 in New York, United States of America and on September 15 in St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour serves as Government’s focal point for policy operation and coordination for all matters pertaining to Government’s natural resources.  It also administers Government’s policy on land related matters and provides for the efficient registration of land.
