ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, September 20th, 2012  – In promoting the BVI as a choice jurisdiction for yacht registration, the Territory’s newest ports of registration, White Bay, Jost Van Dyke and Gorda Sound, Virgin Gorda, are being highlighted in discussions at the Monaco Yacht Show by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE.

The show attracts over 28,000 visitors to southern France; including brokers, designers, equipment manufacturers, shipyards and other members of the luxury yacht industry.

Speaking to attendees yesterday, Premier Smith said that the new ports of registration will provide more options to potential clients who wish to register their vessels in destination BVI, under the BVI flag.

The port of registration is the port usually seen affixed to the stern of any vessel. The two new additional registration ports bring the Territory’s total up to three; the other registration port being Road Harbour.

In an interview with the Department of Information and Public Relations, Director of the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry (VISR) Mr. John Samuel said, “The VISR is very pleased to have achieved this. Gorda Sound and White Bay have been the two most popular requests the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry has seen over the years.”

Mr. Samuel said the bonus of more options for vessel registrations can be very appealing to boat owners who would like their vessel identity reflect one of their favourite destinations, the Virgin Islands.

He continued, “With the anticipated growth of the Register, the potential for multiple requests for identical vessel names increase. The additional ports of registry allow for more flexibility in administering these types of issues, as vessels with identical names can now register at another port within the Territory; setting one apart from the other.”

Mr. Samuel said that interested persons can visit the VISR website at www.vishipping.gov.vg for the step by step process of ship registration.

In addition to the new ports of registration, the Honourable Premier also told the yacht show participants about the Territory’s new ports of call that include Gun Creek, Virgin Gorda and Setting Point, Anegada.

On Tuesday night, the BVI co-sponsored an evening reception with ship brokers and builders, Camper & Nicholson. Yesterday, Premier Smith hosted meetings with key players in the shipping industry. He also hosted a dinner for yacht industry leaders; to further strengthen the BVI’s relationships with those key players and promote the Territory’s yacht registration services.

The BVI’s participation in the Monaco Yacht Show is in line with Government’s mission to promote its first class yachting industry, ship registration services and complementing tourism facilities. Also, Government has targeted ship registration as a potential economic growth sector, with a view to build a better Virgin Islands.
