LITTLE BAY, Montserrat, September 16th, 2012 – More than 100 residents turned out to participate in the Ministry of Health & Social Services first Fitness Jamboree on Saturday, September 15 at the Little Bay Cricket Field.

The event was part of the continued efforts of the ministry to encourage a healthy lifestyle and coincided with the regional celebrations of Caribbean Wellness Day.

The Ministry of Health, the Statistics Department as well as the Rotaract Club fielded teams to participate in rounders, obstacle courses and other games. There were hoola hoops, dominoes, table tennis as well as two rounds of dancercise with music provided by DJ Moto of Tribestar sound system.

Permanent Secretary Elijah Silcott said he was very pleased with the turnout and the level of participation from both children and adults. He added that the ministry will be working to make this an annual event and to encourage all-year round that residents become more active and maintain a healthy living lifestyle for generations to come.

Showing support for the initiative were; the Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael Owen; Health Promotions Officer Wayne Hunte; Head of the Montserrat Christian Council Father Carl Vyphuis and Honourable  Parliamentary Secretary Jermaine Wade.

Last Wednesday, the ministry held a Non-Communicable Disease Forum to highlight the dangers of sedentary living and the fact that most patients admitted to hospital here are suffering with complications from Diabetes and hypertension.

The forum also brought to life that although health officials have been working to offer more assistance and information in ways that residents can take charge of their health, it was up to individuals and parents to get moving and ensure that their children did as well.
