CASTRIES St. Lucia, September 24th, 2012   --  Seventeenth of September 2012. Verna Morris, Foreign Service Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of St. Kitts, is the proud recipient of a scholarship to pursue a Master in Diplomacy and International Relations at the prestigious Diplomatic School of Spain for the academic year 2012-2013.

The Diplomatic School of Spain, located in Madrid, was founded in 1942 under the auspices of Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. The School trains junior members of the Spanish Diplomatic Career for a year before they officially join the Spanish Foreign Service and are posted, either at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Madrid or at Embassies abroad.

The Diplomatic School also offers persons with interests in international affairs the opportunity to pursue a Master in Diplomacy and International Relations. These studies are open to Spaniards and foreign citizens, and members of foreign Diplomatic Services are encouraged to participate. The lessons are imparted by senior diplomats and prestigious members of the Academia. Some are attended by Spanish junior diplomats as part of their training. This opens the door to valuable networking among all the participants.

Spain values its political relationship and special links of cooperation with the Caribbean countries. One such example of the Government of Spain’s commitment to the region’s development is its support of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). The tangible efforts within this cooperation programme include Spain’s financial support of the Organization’s design for the construction of its Headquarters in Saint Lucia and the establishment of the OECS School of Diplomacy.

To this end, the Spanish Government staged a training workshop for OECS Foreign Service members in 2009.  The scholarship granted to Ms. Morris, deserving member of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of St. Kitts is yet another example of Spain’s commitment.

Ms Morris holds a Bachelor’s degree in Philology from the University of Oriente in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba where she studied for five years and acquired the high knowledge of Spanish that this course requires. For the past seven years, she has served as a Foreign Service Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ministry’s support has been key to make Ms Morris’ participation possible.

At the successful completion of her studies and stay in Madrid, Ms Morris will have gained valuable networking, knowledge and skills which no doubt will allow her to further contribute to the advancement of her country in international affairs.

Ms. Morris leaves for Madrid on Wednesday, September 26.
