    Former PM Mitchell calls for resignation of DPP

    Hon. Keith Mitchell

    ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada-RECENTLY removed Prime Minister of Grenada, Hon. Keith Mitchell has called for the current Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Christopher Nelson to step down from his post following the arrest and alleged abuse of a Mitchell government legal advisor.

    Speaking on behalf of Mitchell, attorney Dwight Horsford informed the media on Monday (Sep. 1) that former Mitchell legal advisor Hugh Wildman was embarrassed and abused by Grenada police officers following an August 30 arrest.

    Per directions of the DPP, Wildman was arrested as he attempted to board a plane bound for his homeland of Jamaica. Horsford claimed in his press conference that following Wildman’s arrest he was denied medical attention, forced to sleep on concrete and was detained unnecessarily for thirty hours.

    Following his confinement, Wildman was released without charge and was allowed to

    return to Jamaica.

    Allegations leading to Wildman’s arrest indicate that he had accepted bribes to prevent the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation from probing into a case related to offshore accounts at the now defunct First International Bank of Grenada.

    Horsford went on to state that Wildman’s detention is merely the beginning of a “politically motivated agenda” to target high-ranking members of the former ruling New National Party.

    The DPP quickly countered these allegations in a press conference of his own on Monday, calling them completely false and assuring media that Wildman received adequate medical attention during his time in police custody.

    Wildman’s arrest is not the only controversy surrounding the attorney, as the Grenada Bar Association filed in June to have his license to practice revoked due to court room conduct that they called “unbecoming of the legal profession”.
