Press Release

BRADES, Montserrat (September 24, 2012) – Montserrat’s Honourable Premier Reuben T. Meade is expected to sign on Tuesday, along with other leaders in the Overseas Countries & Territories Association (OCTA), a declaration outlining the path they wish for future relations with the European Union to take and a focus on Green Growth for economic stability.

The premier is presently in Ilulissat, Greenland for the one-day OCTA session which precedes the 11th OCT-EU Ministerial Forum which begins on 26 September there. Also in the delegation are Cabinet Secretary Angela Greenaway, Director of Projects from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Management Joseph Irish and Head of Montserrat UK Office Janice Panton.

The team also stopped in Copenhagen, Denmark on Sunday for an Extra-Ordinary meeting of the Caribbean OCT Council. The intention is for each grouping to present a uniformed voice at the OCTA and later the ministerial conference which will look at the relationship with the European Union and its Overseas Dependencies.

Tuesday’s session is expected to include panel discussions comprising five Heads of Delegations. Each panellist is to make a five-minute presentation on one of four elements of green growth; sustainability as an economic driver OR political visibility, dialogue and OCTA OR Financial services and tourism OR Erosion of trade preferences and competitiveness; based on their OCTs experience and the vision towards the issue at stake.

Montserrat sits on the panel discussing “Green Growth: Sustainability as an economic driver” along with Aruba, Bonaire, Pitcairn, St. Helena, and Wallis & Futuna.

The moderator, Professor Dimitry Kochenov will sum up the conclusions from the discussions, which will form part of the Chairs report from the OCTA group to the 11th OCT EU Forum.

Premier Meade handed over chairmanship of the OCTA in January of this year in Brussels to Greenland’s Honourable Premier Kuupik VanDersee Kleist.
