Saddlers, St. Kitts – Since its creation in 1998, National Heroes Day is celebrated throughout the Federation as a national holiday marked by remembering those who are instrumental in building national pride. Each year, the Rotary Club of Liamuiga (RCL) hosts an annual luncheon for the unsung heroes of the nation.
On September 17, RCL celebrated the greatest treasure of the Federation - its people. Club members hosted a luncheon for elderly members of the Saddlers community and residents of Saddlers Home for the Elderly, a residence for senior citizens.
RCL members, prospective members and friends of the Club gathered at the Saddlers Home sharing stories and laughs with the village elderly who offered wise anecdotes. Along with the lunch, the seniors were treated to melodious steel pan music by renowned panist Melvin Hewlette. Among those who helped to serve the elderly were Home Care Officer Francis Taylor and her caregivers along with Ann Wigley, a retired social worker and friend of the home.
Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social and Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs Ms. Sharon Rattan congratulated the RCL for their continued support for the elderly, in particular those in the Saddlers community. She petitioned the RCL to continue providing this type of service emphasizing that it is important to recognise and appreciate the work and struggles of elders over the years. Their efforts have often resulted in a better life for all, she noted.
President of the RCL, Mr. Lester Hanley said, “The Rotary Club of Liamuiga refuses to forget the contributions of the elderly persons in our nation. On this day and every other day of the year they are heroes in their own right. Our Club is proud of this annual luncheon and we will continue this initiative every year.”
An elderly resident, affectionately known as Mr. Bailey, who participated in the day’s program, thanked RCL for “showing that you care for us. We look forward to this luncheon every year and we have enjoyed the food and your company. With God’s help we hope to see you again next year.”
National Heroes Day is observed annually on September 16th. It honours individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the nation. As of 2012, there are three national heroes: The Right Excellent Sir Robert L. Bradshaw, The Right Excellent Sir C. A. Paul Southwell, and The Right Excellent Sir Joseph N. France.
