ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, September 24th, 2012  –  Members of the public are hereby notified that approval is required by the Public Works Department (PWD) before public roads can be cut.

The notice is an attempt by PWD to educate the community on the proper procedures that should be adhered to before any physical changes can be made to the Territory’s public roads. Director of Public Works, Mr. Jeffrey Skelton told the Department of Information and Public Relations that before someone can legally cut a Government road for any reason, permission must be sought by PWD.

“In the past people would just cut the road, not taking into consideration the impact on traffic, they would not re-instate the road according to required specifications and most of the time most of the time they did so without our knowledge,” Mr. Skelton said.

This practice according to the Director is illegal and should be discontinued immediately. Mr. Skelton said that permission must be sought through an application process that can be obtained at the PWD.

According to the application for permission to open a public road, all utility services entities, Building Authority, Town & Country Planning Department must be informed, excavations must be properly and safely protected at all times and have effective traffic control, backfilling must be supervised and approved by PWD and, the finished surface should not be greater than ¼ inches above the existing pavement.

For more information on the requirements for opening a public road, persons can contact the PWD at 494-2722.

The Public Works Department continues to aspire to provide a safe, practical, efficient, economically and environmentally sound infrastructure that is well designed, constructed and maintained in accordance to recognized codes and standards and is in harmony with the Territory’s social and economic goals.
