Apartment building on Wellington Road to be demolished

By: Suelika N. Creque, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONE of the apartment buildings on Wellington Road will soon be demolished making way for new developments to enhance the community.

According to the National Housing Corporation’s (NHC) new General Manager, Judith Rawlins, the building may be demolished sometime next week.

She said that the building was one that was built in the 1950’s and is now in a deteriorated state.

“There will be new developments within this community to enhance the environment, part of our job at NHC is to create houses for people, and these houses have been a part of CHA for many years. They are now in a deteriorated state and a lot of them are not in the condition where they can actually be occupied,” she said.

She said the occupants of the building which housed four different homes have either moved on or relocated to other NHC project homes.

Rawlins said that they already have several new designs for the area.

“It’s part of the commercial stretch that is developing along Wellington Road, and part of the community in terms of housing. The concepts range from creating modern dwelling to creating a mix of commercial and residential areas.”

In terms of a rumoured Bus Stop being constructed in the area, Rawlins said she is not aware of that.

They are hoping to start building in 2013.

Rawlins began working at NHC at the end of July and holds a Bachelors Degree in Architecture from the University of Technology in Jamaica.

She is also the first female to hold the position of General Manager at the corporation.

Popularly known for her clothing designs, the Fashion Designer and owner of Brown Sugar Designs and boutique plans to continue the programme of NHC by upholding their motto of ‘Raising Standards’.

“Our job is to raise the standards of residential accommodations available for Kittitians,” she said.
