CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - THE reigning Nevis Calypso Monarch, Husani ‘De Inspirer’ Parris is now one of the 175 recipients of the TDC Group of Companies’ prestigious Warren C. Tyson Memorial Scholarship.

Parris received the scholarship at a brief ceremony held at the TDC’s conference room at Pinneys Beach Industrial Estate in the presence of his mother, Juletta Parris; Dennis Knight, Human Resources Manager TDC Group of Companies; Halstead ‘Sooty’ Byron, Chairman Nevis Culturama Committee; Executive Director TDC Nevis Limited Ernie France; and media representatives.

He was welcomed into the scholarship fraternity by Agiel Browne an “A” Level student who is also a beneficiary of the scholarship. The Warren C. Tyson Memorial Scholarship was launched in 1981 and is awarded to deserving students.

In his address at the ceremony, Knight informed the attendees that TDC considers education to be a means of liberation. He said scholarships awarded through TDC also compliment parents’ efforts to raise children.  He also noted that TDC supports various other education pursuits and among them is a programme where TDC employees are reimbursed should they produce receipts and proof of cost of courses they pursue.

“If you take a course or a subject, once it has mutual relevance, we are willing to reimburse the employee, once they pass…we

cannot invest in a failure,” Knight told reporters.

TDC also supports another programme in which students pursue specific certificate, degree and masters courses. At the moment, eight students are studying for their first degrees under this programme.

Under the Michael King Advanced Scholarship, which is a new programme open to the general public, four scholarships have been awarded - two to Nevisians and two to Kittitians.

Each individual under this programme receives financial assistance to the tune of US$5 000.

Knight told the press that students who qualify for TDC scholarships have an advantage of learning basic skills during internship programmes where they work among TDC employees during the life of the scholarship.

De Inspirer will benefit from this arrangement, Knight said.    ~~Adz:Left~~

Byron commended TDC for enlisting De Inpirer as one of the beneficiaries of the scholarship programme. He said the young calypsonian had inspired everybody during the Senior Kaiso Show and “I am happy for Parris and his mum.

This augurs well for our continued partnership. Parris is a bright and confident young man and I am impressed at the way he has been handling this whole situation – fame and awards. We look forward to building on this relationship. TDC may wish in future to support Junior Calypso.”

France hailed the Senior Kaiso Show and said it had been performed to TDC’s expectation, “especially the performance of Parris, the youngest calypsonian ever to perform in Kaiso Senior Shows. So impressed was the TDC Chairman Michael Morton that he announced that Parris would receive the Warren Tyson scholarship.”

France singled out one of his songs, ‘Yes We Can’, and said TDC was keen on ensuring that calypso as an art form is preserved.
