BASSETERRE St. Kitts, September 27th 2012 - Kittitian Dr. Eustace Esdaille, whose professionin the field of Education spans several decades, was installed as the second chairman of the Board of Governors of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC), replacing former chairman Dr. Frank Mills, who served for a three year term.
Dr. Esdaille, along with two new members of the CFBC Board, Meshach Alford and Paul Trotman, was installed at a brief investiture ceremomy at the Nathaniel John Hospitality Centre at the CFBC on September 21 amidst the President of the CFBC, Dr. Hermia Morton-Anthony, Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs, Mrs. Delores Stapleton-Harris, Minister of Education, Hon. Nigel Carty, education officials, students, staff and faculty of the CFBC.
Presently, Dr. Esdaille is the tenured Professor of Accounting and Chair of Accounting, Finance and Computer Information Systems and also the Executive Director of the Centre for Student Success at the University of theVirgin Islands(UVI); Mr. Paul Trotman, who is an accountant at the St. Kitts-Nevis Social Security Board, has had a long career in accounting; and Mr. Meshach Alford, who holds a MSc in Sustainable Rural Development, works in the Ministry of Sustainable Development.
In installing the new members and giving them their charge, Minister Carty underscored the important role that education plays in the development of the country.
“I know that you do this largely out of the value of citizenship in wanting to make a significant contribution to the development of your country and to education,” Minister Carty told the newly installed members.
Dr. Esdaille, in responding to his charge as the new president of the Board, said that his 50 years in education has been attributed to his belief in students.
“I believe strongly in students. I believe in making a difference in people’s lives,” Dr. Esdaille said. "You can count how many seeds are in an apple but you cannot count how many apples there are in one seed.”
“This is an opportunity for me to return something of what I gained by having the foundation for whatever I achieved made right here in St. Kitts, that has a stellar education system that has produced students and is still producing students that excel even at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) where I work.
“I am joining this journey that you are on. I am coming as a learnee, as your colleague. I am not stepping in here to replace anybody or anything. I am here to listen and learn,” Dr. Esdaille said.
Given his wealth of experience in education that has landed him in several senior posts in several countries, Dr. Esdaille said that he believes strongly in transparency, accountability and collaboration.
“If we combine all of our talents and if we become really collaborative in our approach to things that we do, I am certain that this dream of creating a college and ultimately a university that is the beacon for the rest of the Caribbean can be accomplished, not only at the primary and secondary levels but even at the tertiary level.We can accomplish much together,” he said.
Other members of the CFBC Board of Governors are Ms. Jeffrene James, Ms. Sonya Parry, Dr. Bronte Gonsalves, Ms. Patricia Haynes, Mrs. Ionie Liburd-Willett, Mr. Terry Hanley, Canon Rev. Isaiah Phillip, Dr. Hermia Morton-Anthony, Mrs. Susan Owen and Mr. Le-Taino Ferdinand.
