ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, September 28th, 2012 -- The Archives and Records Management Unit of the Deputy Governor's Office is informing the public that the Territory is observing International Right to Know Day today.

This observance, which takes place annually on September 28 is now in its 10th year and was designed to promote the right of access to information.

The birthplace of International Right to Know Day was Sofia, Bulgaria at an international meeting of access to information advocates who proposed that a day be dedicated to the promotion of freedom of information worldwide.

Among the core principles of Right to Know, expressed by the Open Society Justice Initiatives are: access to information is a right of everyone; officials have a duty to assist requesters; refusals must be justified; and everyone has the right to appeal an adverse decision.

Locally, the Archives and Records Management Unit is inviting the general public to visit its office, which is located in the Burhym Building from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to learn more about International Right to Know Day and participate in creating a symbolic collage of information requests to help commemorate the day.

The first five visitors to successfully participate in the International Right to Know Day quiz will win a special keepsake.

For additional information, please contact the Archives and Records Management Unit at telephone number 468-3044.
