BVI Pharmacists win awards at annual regional convention

    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, October 1st, 2012 – The Virgin Islands won three awards during the annual Caribbean Association of Pharmacists (CAP) Convention in Barbados as members of the local pharmaceutical fraternity were recognised for their outstanding work in the health sector.

    The Virgin Islands’ delegation led by Chief of Drugs and Pharmaceutical Services in the Ministry of Health and Social Development, Ms. Gracia Wheatley, was comprised of Pharmacy Manager in the BVI Health Services Authority, Mr. Neil Hawke, and Pharmacist at Qwomar Trading, Ms. Tricia Maxwell.

     

    CAP is an annual meeting attended by regional and internationally based pharmacists. During the convention pharmacists received continuing education credits to enable re-registration. Additionally, participation in the convention ensures that they remain abreast of the latest trends in the medical field.

     

    At the Gala Awards ceremony at the convention, Medicure Pharmacist, Ms. Shabana Budhu won the Pedro Roberts Fair Play Award. This award recognises a member in the Caribbean Association of Pharmacists who has displayed conduct that conforms to the highest ethical and humanitarian standards.

     

    Pharmacy Manager in the BVI Health Services Authority, Mr. Neil Hawke won the Pharmacy Practice Pioneer Awards. Among other criteria, this award recognises pharmacists who have been registered for five years or more; have worked in the same Pharmacy for three years or more; and have made a significant contribution to health system pharmacy.

    Medicure Pharmacy won the Caribbean Pharmacy Sigma Award. Among other criteria, the pharmacy was recognised for dedicating no less than 20% of its floor space to designated pharmacy services; having a patient-oriented display and counseling area; as well as supporting community based activities.

     

    In recognising the awards of the Virgin Islands’ delegation, the Chief of Drugs and Pharmaceutical Services stated, “It is an honour for my colleagues and a Virgin Islands’ pharmacy, to have been selected from so many other regional and international pharmacists and pharmacies for these awards. I am truly proud and congratulate them on this achievement.”

     

    “Furthermore I look forward to their continued support as we work together to continue to raise the standard in pharmacy practices in the Territory,” added Ms. Wheatley.

     

    The Caribbean Association of Pharmacists is comprised of members from the Caribbean, the United States of America and Canada. The convention is hosted in a different Caribbean country every year.

     

    This year’s convention was held from August 13 to 19 with 18 countries represented including Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Cayman Islands, Grenada, Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, Curacao, the Bahamas, the USA and Canada.

     

    Participants attended educational sessions, which among other topics, covered subjects such as Good Manufacturing and Distribution Practices: Pharmaceutical Regulations; HIV Management; Pharmacoeconomics; Overcoming Fear in Diabetic Care: Improving the Pharmacists’ Skills; and Medicine Nutrition Therapy and Medication Therapy Management.
