BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - KASSIM BUCHANAN is once again on trial for wounding with intent and unlawful wounding of Leroy Viera, an incident that is alleged to have taken place on November 14, 2009.

Buchanan had already had his case tried in the January 2012 Criminal Assizes which ended in an eight-four hung jury. The case was therefore traversed to the sitting of the following Assizes.

Buchanan's retrial began today (Oct. 2) with Dennis Merchant leading the prosecution while the accused is self-represented.

Before resting its case, the prosecution called five witnesses to support its claims that Buchanan was guilty as charged for the alleged offences committed against Veira sometime after 5:00 p.m. on Station Street, Sandy Point on the day in question.

The witnesses included Veira, Dr. Cameron Wilkinson and the investigating officer in the matter.

The court was told that while Viera was walking down Station Street, he was attacked by Buchanan and the two rumbled in the street before a second person joined and assisted him in beating Viera before making their escape.

Originally, brothers Kassim and Chaddin Buchanan were jointly charged with the wounding with intent and unlawful wounding of Viera and they both pleaded not guilty, but moments before the first trial began on January 24, 2012, Chaddin pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding.
