    USVI get electronic voting machines

St. Thomas, USVI – Members of the VI Board of Elections were on Friday (Sept. 5) privy to a demonstration of the new electronic voting machines to be used in the September 13 primary election.

Testing of the machines began in St. Thomas on Friday when according to the VI Daily News, P&P Communications Inc. technician Hulbert Lewis certified a randomly selected machine.

Some 62 machines will reportedly be used on St. Croix and 58 for the St. Thomas-St. John district on Saturday and each have to be certified before voting begins; however the board is not required by law to test and certify every machine.

Lewis pointed out several safety mechanisms that would ensure that the machines remained tamper-free until the day of voting including being sealed with several number-coded, plastic locking rings once certified.  ~~Adz:Right~~

On St. Croix, board members met with Patrick Phillips, owner of P&P on Friday who tested and certified seven machines in their presence.

Phillip was quoted as saying, “We have quite a few security features. If a seal is broken, they [poll workers] would not be able to use that machine until I verify it's OK. They have to call for a technician to come in and look at the machine.”
