BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A full decked cafeteria has been added to the list of amenities for the new school term at the Sandy Point High School, and it has already projected a positive change to the institution’s setting.

According to the Chief Education Officer, Patrick Welcome, the cost of constructing the cafeteria was borne by the OECS and the World Bank.

Speaking with SKNVibes, the operator of the cafeteria, John Heyliger, said the cafeteria got a fairly good response from students and teachers alike. He indicated that because the project is a new one to the school’s environment it would take some time before students could give the best expected response.

Heyliger revealed that although the cafeteria currently focuses on selling lunch, he may consider expanding and would be offering a more varied array of commodities, including snacks and desserts.

Lorozine Williams, Principal of the institution, also expressed her pleasure in the establishment of the cafeteria which has added a new feature to the school. She highlighted the benefits that the school might gain and the changes that the cafeteria could have on the environment.

“I feel the cafeteria is a welcomed entity at Sandy Point High. In some way we’ll be able to monitor what the students eat as the cafeteria has already outlined its menu...it is in keeping with the Ministry’s requirements of a healthy plan.”

Williams also stressed the advantage that students no longer have to leave the school premises to get lunch and they could have a more convenient lunch break.

She added that the excess time that would be gained could be used to do constructive work rather than using it to go and buy lunch outside the confines of the school.

~~Adz:Left~~ “I have encouraged the students to purchase lunch there. Members of staff too can get their lunch at the cafeteria, even those who don’t have the time to prepare a meal may purchase from there too,” she added, “There is also scope for socialisation among students and even among teachers, as they can take advantage of the cafeteria.”

She informed that the school had plans of establishing a similar project, but after realising that the institution lacked the necessary resources to do so, the initiative was undertaken by the government.

The Principal however reassured this media house that the school is still part and parcel of the effort and that it has an advantage, as the teachers, students and administrative staff could develop a close relationship with the cafeteria.
