BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A broad area of low pressure is moving across the southern Caribbean, and environmental conditions are conducive to strengthening into a tropical depression over the next couple of days.
According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) located in Miami, at about 2:00 p.m. today (Oct. 11), the system was located about 100 miles to the southeast of Barbados and was charting a north-westerly course at 10-15 miles per hour.
Up until sometime yesterday, it had about a 20 percent chance of development into a tropical cyclone but the NHC reports that currently there is a 50 percent chance of development.
The NHC has indicated that whether or not the system becomes more organised, “strong gusty winds and heavy rainfall are possible across portions of the Lesser Antilles during the next couple of days”.
An officer at the St. Kitts Meteorological Office told SKNVibes that it is possible that the Federation would begin experiencing heavy rainfall, thunder and gusty winds by tomorrow (Oct. 12), associated with the weather system.
While this particular weather system poses no immediate threat to St. Kitts-Nevis, residents and visitors are asked to pay close attention to its development and progress over the next couple of days.
