ROADTOWN Torotla BVI, October 11th, 2012    –    With an aim to improve literacy in the Virgin Islands, The BVI Reading Council is hosting three workshops for primary school teachers and parents as part of their 17th Anniversary celebrations.

The first workshop, “Literacy, Laughter and Learning” will be held on Friday, October 12 at the Treasure Isle Hotel. The second workshop, “Teaching Writing: What Every Educator Should Know” will be held Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The third workshop, specifically geared towards parents is titled “Raising Readers” and will be held at 1 p.m. on October 13.

The workshops are being facilitated by Dr. Mary Bigler, an inspirational educational speaker who has been teaching, speaking and inspiring in the United States, Canada and Europe for more than 40 years.

She holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Michigan, a Masters in History and a Masters in Reading from Eastern Michigan University and a Bachelor of Arts in History from Aquinas College.

Dr. Bigler is a past president of the Michigan Reading Association and appears in Who's Who of American Women. She has served as an advisor to governmental and educational institutions and to business and industry in North America.

Co-President of the BVI Reading Council Mrs. Lynden Smith said she hopes the workshops create a spark that is needed to re-energize the love of reading in the Territory.

“We need a spark to promote the love of reading in the Territory. We don’t want persons to feel that reading is boring. Reading is enjoyable; It takes you places,” she said.

Mrs. Smith stressed that the teaching of reading is of utmost importance.

“The teaching of reading is of fundamental importance if we want to instill a love of reading to our students,” she said, adding, “It is important that parents read with their children and to their children; not only when they are four or five, but all the time. Parents should never stop reading with their children.”

The BVI Reading Council was established on October 9th, 1995 to encourage the study of reading problems at all educational levels. Some of its objectives are to stimulate and promote research in developmental, creative, corrective, and remedial reading; to study the various factors that influence progress in reading and to assist in the development of more adequate teacher-training programmes.

Their 17th anniversary celebrations are being observed under the theme: “Celebrating Reading & Literarcy: 17 years of Advocacy.’

The Ministry of Education and Culture supports the work of the BVI Reading Council in instilling mutual cooperation to facilitate the love of reading in the Territory’s students as we “Create a Culture of Excellence.”
