Shoot For The Stars - Remembering Brenda Burroughs

A family member of the late Brenda Burroughs
By: The Burroughs Family, Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, October 12th 2012 - The "Shoot for The Stars" initiative to honour the memory of Ms. Brenda Burroughs and impact the lives of the nation's youth is ever alive at the Cayon Primary School.

Ms. Brenda Burroughs was born in the Green Valley Community of Cayon to parents who impressed upon her at a very tender age the value of acquiring a solid education.

Brenda's academic journey began at the Cayon Primary School where she quietly developed a strong academic reputation. She further cemented her educational aspirations at the Cayon High School, soaring in every aspect of her educational development.  Brenda's love for education would eventually lead her to the doors of the University of the Virgin Islands followed by graduate studies in North America. Brenda's thirst for education was unceasing.

Brenda, the extremely talented and hard working student, left memorable impressions on the lives of many individuals. Relatives and friends, recall her passion for reading and her devotion to academics.  So much so that on the inside cover of her text and exercise books, Brenda would scrawl her personal motto – “Shoot for the Stars”.

Brenda’s earthly sojourn ended sadly in December of 2007, but her strong spirit, academic thirst and solid character remains.

And so in an effort to preserve and honour the legacy of the soft-spoken yet powerful woman who was loved by so many, Brenda's surviving family members have committed to encouraging young people to "Shoot for the Stars".

On Friday September 22, 2012, nine family members of the late Ms. Brenda Burroughs made a presentation of educational supplies to the Cayon Primary School, a gesture geared at assisting the children of the school and continuing the passion Brenda had for education.

The Principal, Mrs. Marva Buchanan was on hand to accept the generous contribution from the family for which she expressed heartfelt thanks.

Ms. Mona Burroughs, Brenda's mother, handed over the supplies to the Principal and offered a few words of encouragement to the teachers and students of the school. Ms. Sharon Benjamin, a dear cousin of Brenda, also spoke on behalf of the family. Mr. Alwyn Burroughs, Brenda's Uncle gave brief remarks, particularly regarding his childhood experiences growing up in Cayon and attending the Cayon Primary School.

Brenda's Aunt, Mrs. Joyce Isaac, a former teacher of the Cayon Primary School and a Primary School teacher in the Virgin Islands, gave closing remarks.

The brief handing over ceremony ended with a period of meeting and greeting among the family members, students and teachers.

The fact that Brenda’s memory is alive and that the community’s children stand to benefit from the life she lived, remains very dear to the hearts of her family, friends and loved ones.

Any dream imagined; any hope to excel begins with one little boy or little girl who dares just like Brenda to “Shoot For the Stars”.
