Industrial Site to get new bus stop

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WITHIN a matter of weeks, persons who frequent the C. A. Paul Southwell Industrial Site would have the luxury of waiting for their transportation or merely resting their legs at a brand new bus stop.

The erection of the structure is part of the observance of Manufacturing Awareness Week celebrated during October 7 – 13, 2012.

Earlier this week, the members of the Manufacturing Council and those of the Manufacturing Awareness Week Committee assembled just opposite the building where the ICT Centre was located for a brief ground-breaking ceremony, signalling the commencement of the project.

And in the presence of this publication and the committee members, the sod was turned by Chairman of the Bus Stop Erection Committee Terrel Storrod. She was joined by a representative of the Development Bank, which is sponsoring the project.

While actual construction is yet to begin, the plot of land – which was already cleared of shrubbery and any debris – was decorated through the planting of a number of palm trees.

Storrod – who is also the Human Resource Manager for Jaro Electronics – explained to SKNVibes that the project was jointly selected by the committee members as a means of giving back to the community.

“We had a community project to do and we sat in a meeting and brainstormed, and collectively we picked a project in the form of a bus shelter. It is a way of giving back to the community. We decided that we want to beautify the area as well as provide a bus stop for persons who work at the Industrial Site for them to have a place to shelter from the elements on the days that they travel to and from work.”

She said the exact time for the completion of the project is yet unknown but estimates it to be within three to four weeks.

In addition to the erection of a bus stop, Storrod informed that additional benches would be placed and trees planted. These, she said, would not only add to the ambiance of the area but would provide seating and shade for persons frequenting there.
