Tropical Storm Rafael update

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE stormy weather conditions caused by Tropical Storm (TS) Rafael are stabilising but the Federation can still expect to experience some rainfall over the next 24 hours.

The TS passed relatively close to the Federation during the course of last evening (Oct. 13) and the St. Kitts Meteorological Office reported that up to 2:00 this afternoon it was located approximately 235 miles to the north of St. Kitts and about 238 miles to the north of Nevis.

It noted that the outer bands of the TS are still producing rain over the Leeward Islands.

SKNVibes understands that, according to the St. Kitts Meteorological Officer’s records, some 6.52 inches of rain fell between yesterday morning and 2:00 this afternoon as a result of TS Rafael’s passage.

With flowing heavily watercourses, torrential rain and gusty winds, persons are encouraged to remain indoors until conditions have cleared.

AS RS Rafael continues to make its way north-northwest at approximately 12 miles per hour, it currently packs winds of about 60 miles per hour.

The system is expected to continue along this north-northwesterly path throughout the course of this evening and should make a turn to the north sometime tomorrow.

The forecast suggests that the TS is likely to gain strength within the upcoming 48 hours.

Residents of St. Kitts-Nevis can expect heavy rainfall this evening into tomorrow, with conditions clearing up as the day progresses.
