BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE winning slogan for the St. Kitts Tourism Authority Slogan Competition was officially announced today during the organisation’s Official Unveiling Ceremony held at the conference centre of the event’s platinum sponsor, Royal St. Kitts Hotel and Casino.

The slogan, ‘Tourism - the time is now, the opportunity is yours’, granted Sharon Hetherinton the winning position and an attractive package including an all-inclusive stay for two at the Royal St. Kitts Hotel, passes to a Red Sail Catamaran cruise and dinner for two at the hotel’s beach bar.

Vincent Fough and Shiniqua Carey also did exceptionally well and attained the First and Second Runners-up positions.

Over 60 entries were submitted in this year’s competition, which was geared toward including young people and adults to fully understand and appreciate the significance of the tourism sector to their development.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism Hon. Ricky Skerrit highlighted the significance of the competition to the development of youth and the nation at large. He said the interaction and close involvement offered by the Royal St. Kitts Hotel is testament to his ministry’s philosophy of getting the private sector to take responsibility in promoting tourism.

Skerrit stated that last year’s theme, ‘No environment, No Tourism’, focussed on the natural environment and eco-tourism and closely

reflected the outlook for tourism. He added that this year’s theme focuses more on the development of human resource and the empowerment of people, a theme that has been stressed by the Prime Minister after the decision to close the sugar industry.

Minister Skerrit further acknowledged that although the tourism industry is facing a turbulent period because of the many airlines that may be ending their services to the island due to fuel prices, he remains “optimistic about the future of the sector”.

“Tourism is an ongoing evolution of opportunities. The extent to which we take advantage of these opportunities will determine the success of our tourism sector.

It is going to take, more than ever, a partnership between the private and public sectors; a partnership of resources, ideas and personnel to tackle the problems that we are facing. It is critical that we prepare for the worst but hope for the best.”  ~~Adz:Left~~

Also present at the ceremony were Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism Lloyd Lazar, CEO of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority Rosita Jeffers and representative from the Hotel and Tourism association Michael Head.

The Minister of Tourism projected that the next 25 years would have more challenges, but added that tourism provides a solid foundation for wealth creation for the people of the nation.
