BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AFTER days of lengthened interruptions in water supply, the Water Department is well underway to restoring water to those areas of St. Kitts that have been affected.
Persons in some areas of the island have complained of weakened water pressure while others have voiced that they have not had any water supply for hours, and some even had to go days without one drop of water from their faucets.
Some schools including the Seventh Day Adventist Primary School, Epworth/Maurice Hillier Memorial Junior School, and the Victoria Road Pre School had to remain closed yesterday (Oct. 16) as they were without a water supply.
Today, the Water Department's Manager/Water Engineer, Cromwell Williams has provided this publication with an update as to where the Water Department is in trying to restore water to the areas of the island that do not have its supply.
Williams explained that so far most areas have had their water fully restored but that there are still a few areas that have not had their supply restored.
"In the Basseterre area there may be some of The Village that still do not have water, some areas in the Saddlers and the high parts of Cayon, all of these should be rectified within the next few hours, so hopefully by later today everyone should have had their water supply fully restored," he explained.
Williams noted that in recent times persons have become complacent and have stopped storing water because the Water Department had been speedy in the recovery of interrupted water supply, or on many occasions, the supply had not been interrupted.
He, however, stated that regardless of the reliability of the Water supply, persons should still keep water stored as anything can happen where natural disasters are concerned, noting that TS Rafael was intense in terms of the rainfall which affected the Department most.
Williams reminded that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) always advise persons to store enough water when a storm is approaching to get them through at least the first 24 hours after the storm has passed.
The Water Manager also reminded that the Water Department has persons in the various communities called 'Area Overseers' who could be of assistance to those persons who may be having water problems or inquiries, and that those persons could be contacted personally or through the Department's Main Office.
The contact number for the Water Department's Main Office is 466 3070 or 466 1467.
