HAVANA, Cuba – FORMER PRESIDENT and Commander of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro is the recipient of the prestigious Ubuntu Humanitarian Award, which marks the first non-African and third ex-head of state to receive this award.

According to News24.com, the National Heritage Council of South Africa (NHCSA) made the announcement on September 9 that Castro has been chosen “for the role he played in the Cuban Revolution and worldwide contribution to the struggle for an alternative, just and humane society” and for leading the Cuban patriots who had “shared their blood...fighting colonialism for the liberation of the countries of Africa”.

Although the former president will be unable to attend the ceremony due to his current impeding health condition, a Cuban official will be accepting it on his behalf.  ~~Adz:Right~~

According to News24.com, the Ubuntu Award is one that “honours persons who have consistently lived the humanitarian values of the African philosophy of Ubuntu which defines the individual in terms of their relationships with others”.

The two recipients ever to receive this award are former South African President Nelson Mandela and former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda.

The Award Ceremony will be held on September 24, the country’s National Heritage Day, at the Mapungubwe National Park.
