BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – Seven students from across the Federation were this morning presented with scholarship awards and officially inducted into TDC’s Warren Tyson Memorial Scholarship Programme.

The ceremony saw attendance from TDC officials, new scholarship awardees, their loved ones and persons currently involved in the corporate citizen’s scholarship programme.

TDC’s Executive Director and scholarship programme coordinator Nicholas Menon said the students were selected because of their “intelligence and deserving need for this assistance”.

“This year, the company received more than 25 nominees from the Ministry of Education and the selection process ended with these seven academically talented nominees emerging as recipients of the 2008 TDC Warren Tyson Memorial Scholarship,” Menon explained.  ~~Adz:Right~~

The scholarship recipients in St. Kitts are Haniff Charles - Washington Archibald High School (WAHS), Jervisha Phipps - Verchilds High School (VHS), Javed Isaac - Basseterre High School (BHS), Lovique Carter - Sandy Point High School (SPHS), Walton Tyson Jr. - Cayon High School CHS); while Josenne Dore - Gingerland Secondary School (GSS) and Nayala Daniel - Charlestown Secondary School (CSS) are the Nevisian recipients of the 2008 scholarship.

The Executive Director gave a brief overview of the programme noting that it has three distinct components which cater to the holistic development of the scholarship awardees.

“The scholarship programme has three main areas of focus, primarily the Financial Assistance Programme which provides financial assistance for necessary school supplies, equipment and also the payment of all examination fees.  The second part, which we feel is very important, is the Work Experience Programme which provides on-the-job training in a wide variety of disciplines including but not limited to office administration, accounting, business operations, customer service and the hospitality industry. Finally, there is the Mentorship Programme whereby each student is assigned to a senior officer of the company who would provide mentorship as they progresses through the programme.”

The students were congratulated on their achievements thus far and encouraged to continue working diligently as the road to a successful education career can be difficult. SKNVibes understands that for students to remain on the progamme, a 75% pass mark in all subjects must be maintained.

The TDC Warren Tyson Memorial Scholarship Programme which has as its motto, “Moulding Young Minds for the Future” was established in 1981 and approximately 180 students have been beneficiaries. Presently, 42 students are attached to the programme, 29 in St. Kitts and 13 on Nevis.
