By: Suelika N. Creque, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ALWAYS Helping Our Youth-AHOY has won the Student Government Association Elections at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant amassing a total of 209 votes beating their opponents the Student Action Party (SAP).

The voting took place yesterday (Oct. 24) at the College from 8:00 a.m. and ended at 8:00 p.m.

SAP received a total of 185 votes and there were a total of three spoilt ballots.

Elected were Vassany Gumbs and Kenesia Jack of AHOY as President and Vice President respectively.

The mediator who is a faculty member and lecturer at the College for many years, Hugh Heyliger, oversees the elections and guides the students.

In an interview yesterday, Heyliger told SKNVibes that everything went well.

He said that the process was well managed by members of the faculty and that there were alumni that were coming in to assist with the process.

Upon hearing the news that they won, AHOY announced that their promises would be fulfilled and the journey of improvement would continue.

They announced that some of the stuff they wanted to implement were hooks in each bathroom stall to hang bags, a study hall and furniture and activities for the Common Room.

Gumbs in a previous interview with SKNVibes also said that if they are elected they would like to implement more student/faculty related activities.

He said there would be days when there are exchanges between students and teachers while nursing students could perform practicals such as Diabetes checks on other students.

He noted that he would also like to see the College excelling in more sports related activities and for students to be as competitive as they were in high schools in events such as Inter-school activities.

AHOY’s Jack had also informed this media house that they had already started catering to the needs of the students by providing them with items they are in need of.

“We have already given them mirrors for their bathrooms, air fresheners and other stuff. We did a survey to find out what students needed and these were some of the stuff they said,” she said.

She said they have held a party and bake sale among activities to raise funds.

AHOY has two symbols an anchor, which stands for stability and hope and a steering wheel of a ship which stands for guidance and control.

The winning team will be having a party to celebrate their win tomorrow evening, Oct. 26, at Cloud 9.

SAP was represented by Delonte Lewis and Jackiema Flemming for President and Vice President respectively.
