Parry calls for national pride

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - THE Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry, said Nevisians had cause to be proud for achievements made since the twin-island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis attained Independence from Britain in 1983.

Premier Parry was at the time speaking at the 25th Independence Service held at the Netball Complex and hosted by the Nevis Christian Council. Also in attendance was the Deputy Governor General, Eustace John, government ministers, pastors and members of the  general public.

“As we look back at the 25 years, we must feel proud. We have achieved a lot,” he said adding that the pioneers who struggled to take the island to Independence would be recognised.

“After 25 years, we have demonstrated that we as a black nation can do it,” he noted and further stated that the island has an impressive infrastructure as well as outstanding athletes and scholars.  ~~Adz:Right~~

“We are small in numbers but our ambition is as great as anybody else’s. I am proud to be Nevisian. I have thrown all my efforts to the celebrations,” Parry said.  He expressed concern over the youth population who, he said, needed an identity. He called on adults to be good role models.

Parry thanked members of the community choir who have been singing in the choir for the past 25 years, and also the Christian Council for organising the service. 

The Premier spoke of the devastating effects of the hurricanes and natural disasters on many other nations in the world and called on Nevisians to thank God that the island had been spared. “God is protecting this island. May God bless you; may God bless our island!”
