BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Warner Park Cricket Stadium was flooded with government officials, clergy members and well-wishers who went out by the hundreds to give praises and thanks to God for the 25 years of the Federation’s Independence.

The Silver Jubilee Anniversary Thanksgiving Service, organised jointly by the Christian Council and the Evangelical Association, featured special performances from the National Massed Choir, Liturgical Dancers and the Boys of Standard.

In delivering  the feature address, the Rev. Dr. Wycherley Gumbs, Superintendent of the St. Kitts/Nevis Methodist Circuit and member of the Christian Council, focussed on overcoming the issues that have been hampering the progress of the nation including empowerment of males and the removal of political limitations.

“Young men seemingly have been miscued and it is evident almost everywhere, in the schools, homes and in the workplaces. They need to rise up and take their rightful position; they need to rise above crime and violence. Women are striding and nothing seems to keep them back, but young men seem to find every reason in the world not to progress.”    ~~Adz:Right~~

He highlighted the significance of partnering with women not only on a sexual basis but also on a professional level in order to maintain balance and stability in the country. He viewed the partnership as vital to national development and claims that people in the Federation could not survive as a nation without it.

He also mentioned that it is equally important to move beyond politics and recognise the need for unity in order to gain further success. Rev. Gumbs urged government members to utilise the “best of the brains” in the civil service, as he underlined that political patronage causes decline in the quality of the workforce and productivity. To the general public, he challenged them to “vote for St. Kitts and Nevis rather than a party or they would keep making the same mistakes”.

He added that the strength of the youth is their advantage, as the crowd echoed the words of the song ‘We shall overcome’, underlining the words ‘Together we can, Together we will, United we stand, We shall overcome’.
