CASTRIES, St Lucia November 1st, 2012 – The Lucian People's Movement (LPM) said that the roundabout path of the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) government to pursue the Hewanorra Airport redevelopment project, now that it is in power, is a prime example of what political parties should not do when they are in opposition.
To oppose this project vehemently, and to have gone to all lengths to obstruct it for selfish political reasons, not only exposes the conniving and hypocritical nature of politics in Saint Lucia, but also points to the SLP's lack of sincerity in terms of the national development of the country, the LPM said in a press statement.
The LPM pointed an address to the nation on October 25, 2010, in which the then parliamentary leader of the opposition, Dr Kenny Anthony, stated one of his primary reasons for opposing the project.
"Given the multiple crises facing our country from unacceptable high levels of murder and other serious crimes, frustrating high unemployment particularly among the our young people, an extremely weak economy that is affecting all of us, critical problems in our health sector, and serious strains in our social services, is this project in the best interest of our people at this time?" Anthony said at the time.
In light of this apparently stark contrast between what Anthony said in opposition, and what he believes now, including the ever-changing nature of his so-called "principle stands", the LPM called upon Anthony to explain the contradictions between his two positions, given the fact that Saint Lucia is still in a perpetual recession and is still faced with a myriad of socio-economic problems, including high unemployment and violent crime.
Saint Lucians, the LPM argues, cannot continue to accept the kind of politics that have hindered national development, especially over the last 30 years.
“We need to raise the bar, by calling out our leaders for political behaviours that are designed to cause mischief, and hurt the island’s chances of fostering an environment that is conducive to growth and upward economic mobility. Saint Lucians should never have to wait until a particular political party comes to power, to initiate projects that will benefit them,” the party said.
