BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, SEPTEMBER 17TH 2008 (CUOPM) – The contribution of the Right Excellent Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, First National Hero and Father of Independence to the political, economic, social and cultural development of the twin-island Federation was marked here Tuesday – National Heroes Day – a public holiday.
Governor General His Excellency Dr. Sir Cuthbert Sebastian and Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas were among several dignitaries laying wreaths at the Robert L. Bradshaw Memorial Community Park in St. Paul’s, his birthplace.
Following the arrival of the Governor General and the Prime Minister, the Queen’s Representative inspected a Guard of Honour comprising members of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force and the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force. The Defence Force Band was also on parade.
Wreaths will be laid by the Governor General, the Prime Minister, the Commander of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, Lt. Colonel Patrick Wallace; Commissioner of Police, Mr. Austin Williams, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, Her Excellency Ana Maria Gonzalez; the Ambassador of the Republic of China on Taiwan, His Excellency Wu Rong-Chuan; the Ambassador of the Republic of Venezuela, His Excellency Cruz de Jesus Bello; Mr. James Francis on behalf of the Bradshaw Family; the Chairman of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris; the President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union, Mr. Clifford Thomas and Gloria Hanley, a visiting representative of the St. Kitts and Nevis Association in Leeds, England. Uniformed students of the St. Paul’s Primary School presented the wreaths to the officials before they were laid at the base of the Bradshaw Memorial. ~~Adz:Right~~
The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister and other members of the Cabinet, the Diplomatic and Consular Corps, publivc and private sector officials and scores of residents.
